James M. Hutchings scrapbook [microform], [185-?]

Hutchings personal scrapbook consists of 156 pages (some blank). Pasted down are numerous newspaper articles written by him, some with his hand-written annotations. Topics include gold mining and descriptions of Yosemite Valley and many Californian towns. Also included are approximately thirty-eight original California lettersheets published by Hutchings and others. These include several of Hutchings' "California Scenes," mining scenes, and other California views.

James Mason Hutchings was born in 1824 in England. At sixteen years old he traveled to New Orleans and worked as a clerk in a business house there. When he heard about the gold discovery, he left New Orleans in April of 1849, determined to satisfy his craving for adventure by taking the overland route.
